Making a button cover
Joel Peterson uses a ladle to take some molten aluminum, at 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit, out of the furnace.

Peterson pours the aluminum
into molds prepared by Scott Peterson (at right, in background). Each mold is filled with fine sand and makes several dozen covers. When the aluminum cools, the sand is removed, leaving the hardened aluminum.

  The finished product.
